Mauritius in 5 Days: What to See, Taste and Explore

places-visit-mauritius

Planning a short escape to Mauritius? Five days may sound tight, but with a bit of local insight and the right pace, it’s more than enough to get a true feel for the island. You won’t see everything — but you’ll experience what matters: the people, the flavours, the landscapes, and the quiet magic of island life.

As a local tour operator, we’ve helped countless travellers explore Mauritius in just a few days. Here’s how to make the most of your time, without rushing from place to place.

Day 1: Coastal charm and local flavour

Arrive and settle in at your hotel or villa. Choose the east coast for calm beaches and lagoon views, the west coast for stunning sunsets and lively restaurants, the north for a mix of shopping and beach life, or the south for wild, untamed nature.

In the afternoon, take a relaxed walk through Mahébourg, Flic en Flac, or Grand Baie, depending on where you’re staying. Try some street food: dholl puri, boulettes, or fresh coconut water.

End your first day with a seafront dinner. If you’re curious to try something local, go for ourite curry (octopus) or vindaye poisson (pickled fish).

Day 2: Colours, views and island soul

Start your day with a scenic drive to the southwest.

Explore Chamarel — visit the Seven-Coloured Earths, the Chamarel waterfall, and stop at a nearby rum distillery for a tasting and tour.

Enjoy lunch overlooking the hills or coast, depending on your route.

After lunch, drive past Le Morne and stop at the Macondé viewpoint — one of the most iconic lookouts on the island.

Optionally, finish your afternoon with a peaceful visit to Grand Bassin, a sacred lake surrounded by statues and forest.

Day 3: A day at sea

Take a boat trip and explore the island from the water. Choose between Île aux Cerfs on the east coast, Gabriel Island in the north, or a dolphin-watching and snorkelling tour in the west.

This is your day to relax, swim, snorkel, and enjoy the rhythm of the ocean.

Most boat tours include a grilled lunch served onboard or on a beach.

Tip: Book with a trusted Mauritius tour operator to avoid the crowds and enjoy quieter, more intimate experiences.

Day 4: Nature and local life

Begin your morning with a hike in Black River Gorges National Park. Go early for cooler temperatures and clearer views.

On the way back, stop by a local market — Goodlands, Quatre Bornes or the Central Market in Port Louis. These lively places are where you’ll feel the pulse of everyday Mauritian life.

In the evening, unwind with a beach picnic at sunset: samoussas, fresh fruit juice, and your feet in the sand.

Day 5: Easy morning and local treasures

Enjoy a laid-back final morning. Start with a simple Mauritian breakfast — gato piment (chilli cakes) and alouda (a sweet, spiced milk drink).

Visit a craft market or artisan workshop to pick up unique souvenirs: handwoven baskets, vanilla tea, local rum, or handmade spices.

If you’re flying out later in the day, we can organise a private transfer with a few scenic or cultural stops along the way.

Local tips for a better trip

  • Don’t try to do it all — Mauritius rewards slow travellers.
