How to Travel Mauritius Like a Local

locals-Mauritius

Mauritius is known for its picture-perfect beaches, turquoise lagoons, and luxury resorts — but if you stop there, you’ll miss what makes this island truly special: its people, culture, and everyday rhythms. As a local tour operator, we often hear guests say they wish they had discovered the “real” Mauritius earlier. So here’s a guide to help you dive deeper from day one.

Start with the greetings

In Mauritius, saying hello isn’t one-size-fits-all. A simple “Bonjour” goes a long way, especially in towns and villages. You might also hear “Salam” from the Muslim community, or “Namaste” in Hindu areas. Mauritians are warm — a smile and a polite greeting will almost always be returned.

Don’t just eat like a tourist

You’ll find plenty of seafood grills and international dishes at hotels — but the soul of Mauritian cuisine lives in its street corners and local kitchens. Try dholl puri from a food stall, mine frit (fried noodles) from a roadside vendor, or a warm roti with rougaille.

On Sundays, local families gather around for a home-cooked feast — often featuring biryani, curry, and achards (pickled vegetables). If you’re invited, say yes.

Temples, mosques and customs

Mauritius is home to Hindu temples, churches, mosques, Chinese pagodas and more — often just streets apart. When visiting sacred sites, remove your shoes, dress modestly, and observe quietly.

If you’re unsure, just ask. Most locals are happy to explain what’s appropriate — and share a little about their culture in the process.

Take the bus at least once

Renting a car is great for flexibility, but hopping on a local bus gives you a glimpse of island life. From school kids chatting in Creole to vendors climbing aboard with baskets of fruit — it’s all part of the rhythm.

Don’t expect perfect timing or air conditioning. Just sit back, watch the coast roll by, and enjoy the ride.

Buy from local artisans

Skip the factory-made souvenirs. Instead, visit a craft market or small workshop: hand-woven bags, spices blended by hand, wood carvings, and vanilla-infused rum are just a few of the treasures you’ll find.

Not sure where to go? Ask your driver or guide — we know where the real gems are.

Learn a few Creole phrases

You don’t need to speak fluent Mauritian Creole to connect — but learning a few phrases shows respect and gets big smiles in return:

  • “Bonzur” — Hello
  • “Mersi” — Thank you
  • “Ki position?” — How are you?
  • “Mo kontan Moris” — I love Mauritius

Let the unexpected happen

Mauritius isn’t about following a tight itinerary. It’s about leaving space for the little surprises — a street musician in Port Louis, a fruit you’ve never seen before, a quiet moment under a banyan tree.

Let your trip breathe. Let the island show itself.

Travel with locals who love their island

At Premier Mauritius Holidays, we live here. We know the spots that don’t make it into brochures. And we love showing guests around — not just the must-sees, but the small things that make a big impression.

Want help planning an authentic trip? Just ask.

We’re here to make you feel less like a tourist — and more like you’ve been here before.
